During the 1970s, internationally renowned fresco artist Ben Long created these magnificent works of art in two small antique churches here in Ashe County NC. Each is significant to the Christian community. His first frescoes was done in Saint Mary's Episcopal Church on the southwestern side of West Jefferson NC. There you will see his image of Mary Great with Child, John the Baptist, and The Mystery of Faith. A few years later he created a life-size depiction of the Last Supper at the Holy Trinity Church in Glendale Springs NC.

Thousands of people visit the frescoes each year both for their religious significance and because they are beautiful works of art. Many have visited numerous times. And for those of us who have the privilege of living in Ashe County, we go often because it is a favorite place to take out of town family and friends.

The Ashe County Frescoes Foundation was created by community members for the purpose of protecting and preserving these works of art. The organization was established as a North Carolina nonprofit corporation with a board of directors – a majority of whom cannot be members of the Episcopal congregation. Donations can be made to the organization and are used only for expenses related to these unique and great works of art.
